Electives

Students can choose to deepen their skills in the visual arts by electing to continue their art studies. 

 Art I (5th – 8th)- Basic Art overview included but not limited to the following:

• Elements of Art: Line, Shape, Color, Value, Texture, Form, Space
• Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Project (Contest)
• Drawing: Still Life, Self-portrait, Portrait, and Landscape with pencils, colored pencils, and watercolor pencils
• Two-Point Perspective Drawing
• Painting: liquid watercolor, pan watercolor, oil pastel, and acrylic 

Art II  (6th – 8th)- Advanced Art  will focus on the following:

• Principles of Art: Pattern, Rhythm, Movement, Contrast, Emphasis, Balance, Unity
• Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Project (Contest) – Prismacolor’s or paint
• Paper weaving
• Printmaking
• Collage/mixed-media
• Architecture and Interior Design: 3-D shoebox houses with paper and modeling clay
• Canvas Painting - with acrylic paint
• Sculpture  - with air dry clay, model magic, and acrylic paint

Workouts will be high energy, high intensity combining cardiovascular/resistance training and functional training. Activities may include but are not limited to circuits using own body weight and a variety of equipment, strength and flexibility stations focusing on major muscle groups and core, obstacle courses, and team challenges.

• This class is designed to help students work on developing cardiovascular and muscular endurance, teamwork, and perseverance of physical and mental challenges.
• Proper form and technique will be emphasized, while muscle awareness (names of major muscle groups and their primary functions) will be a major focus.
• All movements will be taught safely and effectively under the close supervision of Coach Nuño, certified personal trainer. Personal assessments of progress will be taken throughout the year.

Cornerstone Christian Academy’s Journalism class introduces students to the world of photography, graphic layout, and reporting as students work to compile and layout the school’s yearbook. Students will work collaboratively to tell the story of the year in this interactive class.

• The goal is to teach about the language and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.
• Why? So that we can reach the world with the gospel of Jesus Christ.  
• The bonus is that students are eligible to earn up to one high school credit.

Spanish 2 (This is for 8th grade only) - This is a second-year Spanish Course. Therefore students and parents can expect to be challenged to go to the next level in the language. Prerequisite is Spanish I.

• Students electing Spanish II will attend this class five days a week.
• Building on the fundamentals learned from Spanish I.
•  The goal is to learn about the language and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.
• Why? So that we can reach the world with the gospel of Jesus Christ.  

Students are eligible to earn up to two high school credits, one per year.

• This course will be an introductory class to learn to
  • Play piano
  • Read music
  • Study Music Theory.

This class is designed for students who have a love for the Performing Arts. 

• This course will focus on presenting biblical presentations and skits that will glorify the Lord and encourage others in their daily walk.
• The course will be a medium to share the gospel.

• This course is designed to be lived outside of the normal classroom experience.
• Students may get dirty and sweaty 
• Students will journal, explore and discuss God’s wonderful creation.
• No computers, nor technology needed for this class

The team will be expected to lead worship on a monthly basis during our all-school chapel and will have opportunities to participate in other school related events and activities.

• Teaches students how to develop and use their natural creativity to become problem-solvers.
• Equips students with skills and self-confidence that will carry over to all areas of their lives.
• This class brings the classroom to life as students apply what they learn and combine it with their interests and passions to solve our unique open-ended problems.
• Odyssey of the Mind will emphasize teamwork, budgeting, time management, public speaking, and so much more.

 This elective will focus on school spirit. Students will learn routines, and perform at various games, pep rally, chapels and annual Christmas and spring performances. These students will bring energy and enthusiasm to our activities.
